Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School serves approx. 400 students from pre-K to 5th grade, with before- and after-school programs led by Mt. Hope Learning Center, as well as collaborative ESL and Autism programs. Building on the pilot program in Spring 2025, tutors at MLK Elementary School will focus on intervention and enrichment for math and literacy via small student groups organized by school leaders.
BTC Sites
Vartan Gregorian Elementary School
Located within walking distance from Brown, Vartan Gregorian Elementary School serves approximately 300 K-5 students. In addition to academic programming, Gregorian partners with Brown University Athletics and the Boys and Girls Club. Collaborative ESL instruction and special education services are provided in a general setting and self-contained program as needed. Volunteers sign up for one or more tutoring sessions per week and commit to regularly tutoring at those times. Tutoring occurs during the school day and tutors work with the same group of students over the semester. The school provides ELA or math materials, depending on the month.
Spaziano Elementary School
Focusing on grades 1-5 intervention, Spaziano Elementary School targets literacy goals and writing enrichment during school-day programming. School leaders will support tutors with high quality materials and intentional student groupings. While not required, students who have Spanish-speaking proficiency are preferred for this site.
William D’Abate Elementary School
William D’Abate Elementary School is a K-5 school of approximately 400 students, offering developmental bilingual instruction. D’Abate and Brown University have a longstanding partnership, and it’s a fantastic community to be a part of. As part of Brown Elementary Afterschool Mentoring (BEAM), you’ll design interactive activities for elementary students with fellow Brown volunteers for afterschool enrichment and mentoring and to support neighborhood families. School day BTC tutors work with D'Abate students in grades K-5 to support reading, writing and mathematics learning with individualized attention and in-depth focus. Tutors at D'Abate work with targeted students (identified by the school) and curriculum materials (prepared by the school), in a small-group format.
Nathan Bishop Middle School
Nathan Bishop Middle School is located across from Brown’s football stadium, and serves approximately 700 students in grades 6-8, with smaller learning communities for each grade and advanced academic courses in several core subjects. At Bishop, we tutor in the classroom as teaching assistants to provide extra support for students and to help teachers. We also run afternoon tutoring sessions two times a week where we help students with any homework they need guidance on.
Bridge Academy
Bridge Academy (formerly known as Newcomer Academy) is a small school of just over 100 (predominantly Spanish-speaking) students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) who are classified as newcomers and MLL. In its pilot program in Spring 2025, this site focused on supporting seniors with their Project-Based Diploma Assessment research projects, and, in the fall semester, will also be expanding to ELA and math support, using Khan Academy and iReady learning resources.
Hope High School
Hope is one of the most underserved high schools in the Providence Public School District. With guidance from the Highlander Institute consultancy, Hope offers personalized learning to 1100 general education and ESL students, adopting a restorative approach, with special inclusivity for self-contained, autism, and exceptional needs programs. At Hope, we tutor in the classroom during the school day to give teachers extra hands and students extra attention. We have a very flexible schedule and a wide variety of subjects from Math to Lab Sciences to Research Projects and English courses.
Providence Public Library
Providence Public Library (PPL), in downtown Providence, is a 148-year-old nonprofit corporation providing free public library services through its rich and historic physical and digital collections, extensive information resources, thought-provoking exhibitions, impactful educational programs, and expert staff. Tutors at PPL tutor and mentor grades K-12, focusing primarily on one-on-one homework support for middle and high school aged students.
Times2 STEM Academy
Building on the pilot program in Spring ‘25, BTC looks to tutor in a variety of subjects including Math, Science, ELA, and SAT prep. This program features both in-classroom and after-school tutoring sessions, offered to both middle and high school students.
Brown Collegiate Scholars Program
Brown Collegiate Scholars Program (BCSP) tutoring is designed to provide academic support to enrolled Providence Public School District high school students throughout the school year. This aligns with the BCSP's broader goals of helping students prepare for college and academic success. Tutoring works on a drop-in basis at the BCSP space, where students can bring their coursework along with prepared questions and concerns. Tutors will provide support and guidance based on the student's immediate academic needs. BCSP students can access tutor schedules and content areas on the BCSP portal. Tutors document each session at the conclusion, and data is updated in Salesforce. Tutors can access resources on the BCSP Tutor Google Classroom, and shifts are assigned via the BCSP Google Calendar.
William E. Tolman High School SAT Prep
William E. Tolman Senior High School’s mission is to provide a learning environment grounded in truth and knowledge that develops academic competency, social awareness, civic responsibility and a healthy lifestyle. The staff and students of Tolman commit themselves to celebrating and respecting their cultural and academic diversity in this increasingly competitive world. Tolman’s pride is in its vision to support and foster a safe learning environment for all students. Brown students tutor Tolman students for the SAT, alongside providing general college advice and insight. The program has historically included both SAT prep and a homework club. Meetings occur two times a week, but tutors have the flexibility to decide which of the shifts they would prefer to volunteer at.
Shea High School
Charles E. Shea High School is a diverse community determined to achieve their goals and realize their dreams through a commitment to learning, perseverance, teamwork, and respect. Shea is located in the heart of Pawtucket, RI, representing over 52 countries and over 25 different spoken languages. Shea is a very proud community that works together through support and encouragement to set their students on a course for success. Tutors at Shea work with small student groups after school, focusing on SAT prep and credit recovery programs.
Mount Pleasant High School
Mount Pleasant High School offers personalized learning opportunities to approximately 1,100 general education and ESL students. A recent recipient of a RIDE School Improvement Grant, Mt. Pleasant High School is actively pursuing innovative tactics to boost academic performance. Career and technical programs include pre-engineering and teacher academy/early childhood programs.
