Training and Tutor Resources

Current tutors can view the BTC Fall26 Calendar for details on training events.

Required BTC In-Person Training
Fall semester: October 3 (10-2 for new tutors, 11-2 for returning tutors). This takes place following the tutor-site match. Be sure you have also attended an Engagement Preparation Day for your required clearances on 9/12, 9/19 or 9/26. View the orientation slides here.

Swearer Center Workshops
Throughout the semester, the Swearer Center will be offering workshops and brown bag lunch talks to support your engagement with K-12 local students. Please check our events page for up-to-date info.

In addition, the Swearer Center offers an asynchronous training module on TopHat that provides an Orientation to Brown and Providence History.  This 1-hour workshop focuses on how the themes of power, privilege, historical context, race, and identity might impact students’ community experience.

Swearer Center and Annenberg Institute Staff, BTC Learning Communities
We are here for you! Whether you need additional tutoring guidance or want to learn more community engagement, education-related careers or research, or anything else, we can schedule one-on-one time with you.

New this academic year are peer-led Learning Community sessions. These are opportunities to connect with fellow Brown students engaging with BTC around specific topics. If you are interested in hosting a session, click here for more information.

New this academic year are Tutor Skills Refreshers: These will be structured sessions to further develop tutor skills and knowledge. Examples include scholars and specialists discussing relevant topics (i.e. supporting different learning needs, working with MLL students, etc.), or collaborations with other groups and organizations working in the community.

Curriculum resources
The following resources have been created for BTC, or provided by our site partners:

Site Profiles
BTC Site Profiles are intended to provide a summary of some publicly-available data about our various sites. Tutors can read these for broad, contextual understanding, and we encourage you to recognize the countless, dynamic qualities that are not easily represented or quantified in site profiles. As you get to know your students, school/site leaders and staff, and your fellow BTC tutors, you’ll grow a more robust understanding of what each of these learning communities hold.

Site Visits
BTC staff will conduct site visits and observations a couple times per semester. These are intended to help us understand how the program is working and where we can improve. Check out our protocol here.

Saga Education
Saga Coach Self-Paced Online Tutor Training- Covers the essential components of effective tutoring. Completion time is about 10 hours, and is organized into three main sections: relationships, ratio and rigor. You can save your progress within the training, so we recommend completing it at a pace that best suits your learning style. Tutors can earn BTC points for completing this!
