What are the steps to becoming a BTC Tutor?
Are you new to Brown Tutoring Corps? Please create an account and complete an application for the Fall Semester by September 26, 2026.
Are you a returning tutor? Please click update your schedule for the Fall Semester by September 26, 2026 and be sure your clearances are up-to-date. This is required to be matched and to engage in tutoring this semester.
In addition to the BTC application or returning tutor re-commitment, there are 4 other preparation requirements for all tutors:
- Attend one Engagement Preparation Day (EPD) for your background check and other compliance requirements for working with minors. The process takes about 20 minutes. No appointment needed; Drop in when you can during the following specified times:
- Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 1 pm - 3:30 pm
- Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 1pm - 3:30 pm
- Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 1pm - 3:30 pm
Required EPDs are held at the Swearer Center (located at the corner of Stimson/Hope)
Notes:
- Bring your government-issued ID (i.e. passport, driver's license, state ID)
- Bring a laptop or smartphone if you have one.
- Brown University students who do not participate in one of the EPDs will not be able to engage through the Brown Tutoring Corps. Please email browntutoringcorps@brown.edu with questions or concerns.
- If you are a returning tutor or participated in EPD in January or February 2026 for another program, your clearances are valid for one calendar year. You will receive an email from swearerops@brown.edu verifying this.
- Attend one BTC in-person training and review the BTC Tutor Handbook. Training dates TBA.
- Confirm your Match. Before tutoring begins, each tutor will be matched with a tutoring site based on the skills, interests, and availability you indicated within the BTC Application. Generally, once matched with a site, the school/site will assign each tutor to a group of students or a specific class. Your site leader will communicate scheduling details with you, and share all relevant site-specific information.
- Attend a site orientation to learn about site-specific details and expectations following your match. Details TBA.
